Origin of “dumbbell”

I’ve always had an interest in the unusual origins of words and phrases and recently found out why a dumbbell is called a dumbbell.

Back when bell ringing was a big thing the ringers would train with silenced bells – a regular bell with the hammer removed. This silenced bell was called a dumb bell which eventually came to refer to the dumbbell we know today.
